Windows of another time,
the same view but with different eyes,
black as coal as they might be,
they have not lived this history,
but they have shared the same fine dream,
that all people one day will be free.
Note: this view is from inside one of the former slave quarters at Magnolia Gardens, the oldest garden in America, that is taking care to uncover and preserve the past for those who know so little of their ancestry. While it seems that most who study this period of time focus on the pain of the slavery days, or sweep it under the carpet entirely, at this beautiful garden the heart of their effort is to honor the skills, intelligence and beauty with which the enslaved ones once graced their past.
